I shopped...

All three raised beds, finally full of soil, and ready to plant.
So...I shopped, and the garden is happy...or at least it will be when I get all the plants into the ground.
If all of this stuff grows, I am not sure what the heck I am actually going to do with all the harvest.  I guess I will be cooking/canning/freezing in July and August for the entire winter.  Anyone have any good salsa recipes? Cause I think I bought 14 tomato plants.

One more day of Chicago Pics...

I never finished telling you about my trip...
Last Saturday in Chicago was fantastic.
I had the whole day free to set off on my own about the city and wander with my camera taking pictures in parks, and visiting the Museum at the Art Institute of Chicago, sitting on the Chicago River having a leisurely lunch and reading, walking the Magnificent Mile, and finishing up the night browsing at Borders and taking myself out to dinner at PJ Clarke's.  I flew home (uneventfully) Sunday Morning.

A few of my favorite pics from Saturday are featured below.  This whole trip reminded me that exploring new places is so much fun...I am going to try and do more of that closer to home this summer.  I will try and bring along my camera so I can share those trips.  In the meantime:

Its my birthday and I'll meme if I want to...

French Lilac - almost in full Bloom

I think this french lilac is totally blooming in honor of my birthday! (Yes, I am implying that my yard sent me flowers, so what?)

I got tagged by Nachaele and Cindy while in Chicago for the same meme.  Today seemed like a good day to talk about myself so...

1) What was I doing 10 years ago?
I was still in my first job out of college - living in Washington, DC and lobbying on behalf of the engineers of America for more research and development funding, and portable/universal retirement plans.  And honestly, since today is my birthday, EXACTLY 10 years ago, I was probably out at Guapo's Restaurant drinking margaritas. (If only someone would open a Guapo's in Rhode Island, my life would be complete.)

2) What are 5 things on my to-do list for today (not in any particular order):
water the new hydrangea plants
work on my Cherry Blossom Shawl
walk the Murph
attend water aerobics class (yes, I actually do this 3 nights per week)
clean my bathrooms

3) Snacks I enjoy:
Oh so many.  Right now I am on a trying to eat healthy kick and I am enjoying cut up veggies with Sabre brand hummus, as well as Amy's Organics Black Bean and Corn Salsa with pretzels.

4) Things I would do if I were a billionaire:
Travel more.
Then probably just a lot more crafting.
And hire someone to cut the lawn and clean my house.

5) Places I have lived:
Cape Cod, MA
Washington, DC - Capital Hill, and Mount Pleasant Areas
Bethesda, Maryland (I LOVED that apartment)
Silver Spring, Maryland
Warwick, RI
and I once spent a whole summer in Kyoto, Japan as an exchange student

6) Jobs I have had:
Tons and tons of babysitting
Video store clerk
Chamber Maid
Various crazy food service gigs including waitressing, managing and bar tending for some smaller independent places as well as Friendly's and Outback Steakhouse.
Lobbiest
Administrator for a NonProfit Foundation
Editor/Project Manager/Office Manager/Sales&Marketing for a Research Firm

7) Peeps I wanna know more about:
If you are reading this, I want to know more about you, but don't want you to have pressure to fill out a meme - if you want to do it - you are tagged...just leave me a comment so I can go read yours!

Memorial Day in Review...

Tomorrow is my birthday.  I got my best birthday present EVER (isn't every year a new opportunity for that) on Memorial Day Monday, as my parents and grandparents drove up to my house, and spent about 5 hours lending a MUCH MUCH needed helping hand with my yard.

Since I have never had a yard before, it is a bit overwhelming for me, and they helped me set some of my bigger plans in motion.  Hopefully I will be able to keep up with it now.  No pictures of people working...I didn't want to distract my slaves family.  But here is some of the fruits of our labors:

The actual b-day gift to go with the yard work were 4 hydrangea bushes that I requested for my side yard.  My dad planted them:

Birthday Present

I can already picture them big and bushy with gorgeous blue flowers...and I have plans to get up and give them a good strong drink every morning to make them grow big and strong.

Mom and grandma devoted the bulk of the day to pruning, weeding, thinning out, and transplanting my front garden.  It looks one billion times better.  The daffodils are no longer all hidden behind the lillies, and my peony is in the sun, so it may even bloom.  Its weird, but there were such an abundance of lilies, I couldn't even give them away, so some of them ended up in the trash instead of transplanted.

Dad and grandpa whittled away at my GIANT pile of brush and managed to get it down to this tiny pile I can manage to finish breaking up myself in the next couple of weeks.  I forgot to take a picture, but we had about a dozen 30 gallon yard bags just full of brush and clippings on the curb for trash pickup.

They also edged, generally cleaned up, and most importantly, put together MY RAISED GARDEN BEDS!!! (I could have done it myself, but I'm so glad they did!)

Raised Beds

First Raised Garden Bed

I am currently in the process of ordering dirt and peet moss delivered to go in them, and some smooth gravel/stones to make a decorative path all the way around them.  The path will come out 3 feet all the way around the garden (on top of the black stuff).  Each garden is 3 feet x 6 feet by 10 inches high.  The first two are for my rotating veggies, the third (furthest away) is for my asparagus and rhubarb.  The window boxes on the end are for herbs.

They also delivered their old patio set, which they gave to me when they bought a fancy new one this year.  Pictured below is the set with only one chair, as the other chairs are holding the stuff for the gardens in place.

Table and BBQ

And so ends my description of the best birthday present yet. It was so tiring, but having them all around was totally motivating, and I am so happy to have it all ready.
Hmmmm...doesn't my yard look just right for a BBQ?

I had tons of fun in Chicago.  Thanks to everyone who commented on my pictures.
I may be tempted to post one more days worth of events later this week.  In the meantime, I will report that I actually blow dried my hair every day.  I even took pictures in the bathroom mirror to prove it.  (Aren't those cool earrings?):

Look at my Hair

This is still a knitting blog.  And I even knit a little on my trip.  Mostly in the airport on the way home...I am now up to 5 repeats completed out of the 7 basketweave chart repeats I am going to be doing.  I love the way it is coming out.  Now I just can't wait until I can move on to the falling leaves pattern, because it will require less concentration, and I can bring it to knitting night!

Hanabi - 5 Repeats

I have awesome stories about how I spent my memorial day with really helpful family members, but those are for tomorrow.  Right now, I will just say that I picked another salad's worth of lettuce from my garden to have for lunch today, and then added blackberries, sliced apples, and chevre.  Growing stuff is so cool, I can't wait to get my garden started in earnest!!

Friday - touring on the river...

I swear I was working today...a little.
My class was a half day, and afterwards I took advantage of some great weather to take an architectural cruise on the Chicago and learn a little more about the history of the city.
Here's me squinting at the camera on the boat:

On the Architecture Tour

Bottom line, Chicago is PRETTY.  I enjoyed seeing all the buildings and taking a billion pictures.  I uploaded a bunch onto my flickr - here are a few favorites:

I also walked down and browsed around Navy Pier:

Checked out a stained glass window exhibit:

Partook of some of Chicago's finer sushi for dinner (no idea what the restaurant's name was), and accompanied a friend to a hysterical sketch comedy called Bye Bye Liver.

So that was friday.  =)

Chicago, a walking tour...

I got to see some of Chicago by foot after my class today.

Leaving, On a Jet Plane...

Its so hard to decide for knitters to decide what to pack - don't you agree?
My clothes have been packed for 2 days, my toiletries, makeup and jewelry for one.  I even packed some snacks for my hotel room two days ago.
Yet I'm heading to Chicago for business (and a little bit of fun) this afternoon, and I finally decided what knitting to take with me this morning.  I cast on two new projects last night for the occasion:

A simple cowl project made with some great big sea silk I had in my stash - with a pattern I saw on Ravelry: Beech Wood by Ilga Leja.

Handmaiden Cowl Closeup
Unfortunately, I couldnt sleep last night, so I got overzealous and finished the cowl, so its no longer coming to Chicago.  I love the way it came out - I think it showcases the one skein of Great Big Sea Silk Perfectly, and the stitch definition is gorgeous:

A new pair of socks that actually ARE coming with me - pattern by me, yarn named for me and dyed by MamaE for last month's sock club.

I'm also taking my Hanami Shawl to work on if I get some quiet time:

And a backup ball of Trekking XXL, just in case!

Don't judge me.  You know you pack too much knitting too!

Recycling...

One shrunken gap sweater turned into a laptop sleeve for Nean (it WAS her sweater) and 4 ipod or telephone covers.  I snagged one of the ipod covers (top right), the other three are for assorted family members.
